BREAKING: Pennsylvania Governor’s Mansion Damaged in Arson Attack, Suspect in Custody
April 14, 2025 |
In a shocking incident early Sunday morning, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were forced to evacuate their official residence in Harrisburg after a fire was deliberately set inside the historic building.
Authorities have confirmed that Cody Balmer, 38, of Harrisburg, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder, arson, terrorism, and other related offenses after he allegedly broke into the governor’s mansion and ignited multiple fires using homemade incendiary devices.
Fire Breaks Out While Family Sleeps
Around 2 a.m., Governor Shapiro, his wife Lori, their children, guests, and two dogs were awoken by emergency personnel pounding on the door. Flames were rapidly spreading through the first floor of the residence. Fortunately, all occupants were safely evacuated with no injuries reported.
According to investigators, Balmer scaled the perimeter fence, shattered a window with a hammer, and threw Molotov cocktails—crafted from beer bottles and gasoline—into the building. He then kicked down a door and fled before authorities could apprehend him on site.
Suspect Confessed, Cited Hatred for Governor
Police say Balmer later turned himself in after allegedly admitting the crime to an ex-partner. In a disturbing confession, Balmer reportedly told investigators that he was angry at Governor Shapiro and would have attacked him with a hammer if confronted during the break-in.
Court records show Balmer has a prior criminal history, including a 2016 conviction for forgery and theft.
Significant Damage to Historic Building
The fire caused extensive destruction to the mansion’s interior, including historic artifacts and the dining room where the Shapiro family had hosted a Passover dinner just hours earlier. Photos released by state officials show blackened walls, broken glass, and scorched furniture.
Built in 1968, the 29,000-square-foot Georgian-style residence has served as home to eight Pennsylvania governors and is considered a state treasure.
Political and Public Reactions
During a press briefing, an emotional Governor Shapiro called the act “an attack on the people of Pennsylvania,” while firmly declaring that he would not be intimidated. “This kind of political violence is unacceptable—no matter who it targets,” he stated. “I will continue doing the job I was elected to do.”
Political leaders across party lines have condemned the incident. Vice President JD Vance called it “disgusting,” and Senator John Fetterman labeled it “appalling.”
The FBI is assisting state police in the investigation, and federal charges may follow.
Security Measures Under Review
In the aftermath, a full security audit is being conducted to prevent future threats against elected officials and their families. Authorities confirmed that the governor’s protective detail was on-site and actively responding during the time of the attack.
