Shocking picture shows Sunita Williams’ weight loss: Here’s what she can eat in space

NASA astronaut Sunita Williams is facing health concerns

Indian-origin NASA astronaut Sunita Williams has been stranded in space for months after leaving Earth aboard a Boeing Starliner for an eight-day trip in June. Now NASA estimates that Williams and fellow astronaut Barry Wilmore may not be able to return until February 2025.
Amid growing concerns about the health of astronauts, shocking pictures of a hollow-faced Williams have emerged from aboard the International Space Station (ISS). An astronaut faces a health crisis after an extended stay after her Starliner spacecraft malfunctions. The images raised concerns about significant weight loss and potential nutritional deficiencies, a common problem astronauts face when in space for long periods of time. Doctors said the images were disturbing, adding that “the natural stress of life at very high altitude” was getting to the astronauts’ bodies.
There have also been questions about whether the astronauts are running out of food before the expected return in February 2025. NASA clarified in August that the ISS has sufficient supplies to support the crew. “The space station is well stocked with everything the crew needs, including food, water, clothing and oxygen. Two spacecraft recently arrived at the ISS with 8,200 pounds of food, fuel, supplies and three tons of cargo,” NASA said.

What can Sunita Williams eat?
Since zero gravity works in a completely different way, the kind of food astronauts can eat also changes. According to NASA, there are different categories of space food that astronauts can eat during their time in space.

Dehydrated foods are the most common. According to NASA, water is removed from rehydratable foods to make them easier to store. These can be rehydrated for consumption by astronauts in space.

Others are heat-stabilized foods such as canned fruit and fish and puddings that can be kept at room temperature. Other foods such as dried peaches, pears, apricots and meat can be eaten without any preparation, while nuts, muesli and biscuits are completely ready to eat.

Frozen foods such as quiche, casserole and chicken pot pie are also available. In the viral image, Williams was seen enjoying a pizza that was most likely frozen.
