Brampton police arrest Sikh justice coordinator in Hindu temple violence case
Gosal serves as the Khalistan Referendum Coordinator for the Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) group in Canada
Peel Regional Police arrested Inderjeet Singh Gosal, a 35-year-old resident of Brampton, Canada, on a charge of assault with a weapon following a violent demonstration at a temple on The Gore Road in Brampton. The incident occurred on November 3, when tensions between protesters and counter-protesters escalated, resulting in physical confrontations.
Investigators from the 21 Division Criminal Investigations Bureau and the Strategic Investigation Team (SIT) analyzed video footage showing individuals using flags and sticks to attack others during the clash. Gosal, identified as one of the participants, was taken into custody on November 8, released on parole and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
Gosal, who serves as the Khalistan referendum coordinator for the group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) in Canada, organized the protest outside the temple, the Toronto Star reported.
He told The Star that his activism also made him a target because his house was shot at earlier this year. RCMP have since placed a “duty to warn” on him and are advising him of potential threats.
Insisting that the protest was directed solely against the Indian government and its officials, not the Hindu community, Gosal said, “This is not a battle between Hindus and Sikhs. This is strictly Sikhs versus the Indian government.” He also pointed out that a similar protest had taken place peacefully the previous day at Ross Gurdwara in Surrey, BC.
The SIT, which was set up to investigate the violence that erupted last Sunday and Monday, continued to examine hundreds of videos from the November 3 and 4 incidents, and officials are trying to identify more suspects and more arrests are expected in connection with the demonstration. . .
On Thursday, Peel police arrested and charged Ranendra Lal Banerjee, 57, with public incitement to hatred in connection with the incident.
Arrest warrants were also issued for two men in their 20s for alleged threats and conspiracy to commit assault with a weapon. A police officer was also suspended over the incident after videos of him running into the temple surfaced last Sunday.
