By World Hub
The global music community is grieving after the tragic deaths of renowned music agent Dave Shapiro and former The Devil Wears Prada drummer Dan Williams, who were killed in a private plane crash early Thursday morning in San Diego, California.
The Cessna 550 aircraft crashed around 3:45am local time, veering into a residential neighborhood near Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport. The accident left six people dead, including Shapiro and Williams, and injured eight others on the ground. Over 100 residents were evacuated due to the extensive debris field and damaged homes and vehicles.
A Loss Felt Across the Music Industry
Dave Shapiro, co-founder of Sound Talent Group, was a powerful force in the alternative and heavy rock music scene. He represented iconic acts like Sum 41, Story of the Year, and Pierce the Veil, and played a pivotal role in elevating the careers of dozens of artists across genres. Shapiro was also known for managing pop and rock acts like Vanessa Carlton and Hanson.
Sound Talent Group released a heartfelt statement:
“We are devastated by the loss of our co-founder [David], colleagues and friends. Our hearts go out to their families and to everyone impacted by today’s tragedy.”
In addition to his agency work, Shapiro was a passionate aviator and thrill-seeker. His aviation company, Velocity, remembered him fondly:
“From BASE jumping to aerobatic flying, helicopters to twin engines, flight instructing to furthering his own education—didn’t matter to Dave as long as he got to be in the sky.”
Remembering Dan Williams
While authorities have yet to formally confirm Dan Williams’ death, his former bandmates in The Devil Wears Prada shared their heartbreak on Instagram, writing:
“No words. We owe you everything. Love you forever.”
Williams was a founding member of the Christian metalcore band and performed on several of their critically acclaimed albums, including “With Roots Above & Branches Below” and “Dead Throne.” He was deeply respected for his drumming prowess and stage presence, and fans across social media have flooded platforms with emotional tributes.
One Reddit user wrote:
“Genuinely devastated by this. I looked up to him as a drummer and as a person. Life is just unfair.”
Another added:
“[Shapiro] launched the careers of so many great bands. Such a sad day.”
A Legacy Beyond Music

Shapiro’s passion extended far beyond the stage. A licensed pilot, he frequently posted about his love of aviation. Hours before the crash, both Shapiro and Williams reportedly shared images from inside the plane—Williams seated in the co-pilot’s seat.
Shapiro leaves behind his wife Julia, whom he married in 2016. In a 2020 interview, he expressed gratitude for her and their life together amid the chaos of the music industry.
“Despite all the uncertainty in our business, and in the world, I still wake up grateful every day,” he said.
Ongoing Investigation
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are currently investigating the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports indicate the plane encountered difficulties shortly after takeoff and failed to reach proper altitude before crashing.
Authorities described a “gigantic debris field,” and San Diego’s Assistant Fire Chief reported damage to 15 homes and multiple vehicles in the area.
As the investigation continues, the music world and fans alike reflect on the enduring legacies of Dave Shapiro and Dan Williams—two men who helped shape modern rock and alternative music, and whose loss will be felt for years to come.
